Buying FSC Certified Wood Products From Vietnam
July 13, 2026
FSC is the certification buyers ask for most often when sourcing wood from Vietnam, and it is also the one most often claimed loosely. The gap between “we work with an FSC certified factory” and “this invoice carries an FSC claim” is where disputes start.
This is what the system actually does, and the checks that take five minutes.
What chain of custody means
FSC has two halves. Forest management certification covers the plantation or forest. Chain of custody covers every company that takes ownership of the material afterwards: the sawmill, the panel producer, the furniture factory, sometimes a trader.
For your order to carry a claim, every link that owns the material has to hold a valid chain of custody certificate, and the material has to move through each one under a controlled system that keeps it separated or accounted for.
One broken link and the claim stops, even if the tree was certified.
This is why buying “from an FSC certified factory” proves less than people assume. A certified factory can buy uncertified timber and make uncertified products all day. The certificate says it is capable of handling certified material correctly, not that your order did.
Vietnam specifics
Plantation acacia has a reasonable and growing certified supply in Vietnam, often through smallholder group certification. Rubberwood certified supply exists but is thinner, because the plantation exists for latex and certification follows the rubber industry rather than the timber industry.
Practical consequences for a buyer.
Certified acacia is usually available for outdoor furniture, flooring and panels, with a lead time premium during peak season.
Certified rubberwood for indoor furniture and components is harder, and a factory may offer FSC Mix rather than FSC 100% because it blends certified and controlled wood to meet volume.
Certified panel products depend on the panel mill, not the furniture factory, so it is a separate certificate to check.
If your customer’s requirement is flexible on claim type, ask early. Accepting FSC Mix instead of FSC 100% can cut the price premium and the lead time noticeably.
The five minute verification
Do this before the first order and again annually.
Get the certificate code. It looks like a short alphanumeric code issued by a certification body. Ask for it in writing, not as a picture of a certificate.
Look it up on the FSC public search. Confirm it is valid today. Certificates get suspended and the holder does not always volunteer that.
Check the scope. The listing shows product types covered. A scope that covers sawn timber does not cover finished furniture. A scope that covers outdoor furniture may not cover cabinets.
Check the legal entity. The certificate holder has to be the company on your purchase contract. Groups often have a manufacturing entity and a separate trading entity, and only one of them may be certified.
Confirm the claim will appear on the invoice. With the claim type spelled out. This is the document your own customer or auditor will ask to see.
Where claims go wrong
Three patterns cover most of it.
The certified line was not ordered. The factory holds a certificate, you assumed the goods were certified, nobody wrote it into the purchase order and the goods shipped as standard production. Fix: name FSC and the claim type in the purchase order, the contract and the specification.
The claim exists in email only. The salesperson confirmed FSC, the invoice says nothing. An FSC claim that is not on the invoice does not exist in the system. Fix: make the invoice claim a payment condition.
A mixed product carries a blanket claim. A cabinet with certified solid parts and uncertified panel parts cannot honestly carry a single FSC 100% claim. Fix: declare components and agree the claim type per product, not per order.
Is it worth it
That depends entirely on whether your customer pays for it. FSC is a commercial requirement, not a legal one. It does not replace the legality documents you need for the EU or the US, and buyers sometimes assume it does.
Where it earns its cost: retail programs with published sustainability commitments, contract and hospitality projects with green building credits, and European customers who want a visible claim alongside their EUDR file.
Where it usually does not: private label products sold on price, components sold into another factory that does not carry the claim forward, and any product where the buyer never asked.
Decide before you specify, because adding FSC after a price is agreed is a renegotiation rather than an adjustment.
If the certified supply for your species is tight, the outdoor species guide and the acacia versus rubberwood comparison cover which material is likely to be available certified.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled?
FSC 100% means all the material comes from FSC certified forests. FSC Mix blends certified, recycled and controlled wood under a percentage or credit system. FSC Recycled is reclaimed material. The claim type has to be stated on the invoice, because the three are not interchangeable to your customer.
Does FSC certification cost more?
Yes, usually a single digit to low double digit percentage on the material, plus the factory's own certification overhead. The gap is widest when certified plantation supply is tight, which happens seasonally.
Can I verify an FSC certificate myself?
Yes, and you should. The FSC public search is free and open. Check validity, scope and that the certificate holder matches the company on your contract rather than a related trading name.
