Where Furniture Is Actually Made in Vietnam

June 1, 2026

Vietnam has several furniture industries rather than one, and they developed for different reasons. Knowing which cluster fits your product saves a month of enquiries to factories that could build it but should not.

The practical differences are product strength, how deep the local subcontractor base runs and which port the goods leave from.

The south: Binh Duong and Dong Nai

The largest concentration of export furniture manufacturing in the country, sitting north and east of Ho Chi Minh City.

Strength. Indoor furniture across every price point, cabinet and carcass work, flat pack, and the widest range of factory sizes from small workshops to plants running retail programmes.

Subcontractor depth. This is the real advantage. Metal fabrication, glass, stone, upholstery, hardware, printing and carton making all sit within an hour’s drive. A factory here can get a metal frame made and returned in a week. That matters more for lead time than machine capacity does.

Port. Ho Chi Minh City, close enough that inland trucking is short and predictable.

Trade offs. Peak season competition for capacity is fiercest here, because the large retail programmes run here. Costs have risen with industrial land prices. A small buyer can find itself the least important customer in a plant serving large accounts.

Who should source here. Indoor furniture, cabinets, anything with mixed materials, anything that needs a deep subcontractor base, and anyone who wants the widest choice of factory sizes. It is also the natural home for hospitality and contract packages, which need several trades coordinated to one date.

The centre: Quy Nhon and Binh Dinh

The outdoor furniture cluster, built around proximity to the acacia plantations of the central highlands.

Strength. Garden and outdoor furniture, folding furniture, decking, and the acacia supply chain from log through sawmill to finished product.

Subcontractor depth. Thinner than the south. Wood work is comprehensive, other materials less so. A product that needs precision metal or upholstery often means components trucked from the south.

Port. Quy Nhon for regional shipping, with some volume trucked south to Ho Chi Minh City for better sailing frequency to Europe and North America.

Trade offs. Narrower product range and a strong seasonal shape, since the garden furniture year books early. Fewer factories, so less choice if a first candidate declines.

Who should source here. Outdoor furniture, acacia products, decking, and anyone who wants short chain traceability back to the plantation, which helps with EUDR data as covered in the EUDR guide.

The north: Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Binh Duong of the north

A different industry with a different history, closer to the Chinese border and the panel supply chain.

Strength. Plywood, panels, components, and increasingly furniture for buyers relocating volume from southern China.

Subcontractor depth. Good for panel and component work, with strong links to Chinese material supply. Less deep on the finishing and hand work that southern furniture factories are known for.

Port. Hai Phong, with good sailing to North Asia and reasonable service to Europe and North America.

Trade offs. The winter is genuinely cooler and more humid than the south, which affects finishing schedules. Some buyers report longer finish drying times in the northern winter months.

Who should source here. Plywood and panel products, components, and buyers whose supply chain already runs through southern China and wants a short logistical move.

What the cluster changes for your order

Lead time on mixed products. A product with metal, glass or upholstery built in a deep cluster runs faster than the same product built where components must be trucked. Ask for the subcontractor list and where they are, as covered in the factory vetting guide.

Port and Incoterm. Always ask which port the FOB price uses. A central or northern factory quoting FOB Ho Chi Minh City has several hundred kilometres of trucking inside the number, and that cost moves with fuel. The Incoterms guide covers how to normalise quotes across terms.

Inspection logistics. Third party inspectors are concentrated in the south. An inspection in the centre or north can cost more and need more notice.

Species availability. Acacia is closest to the centre, rubberwood supply follows the rubber growing regions in the south and southeast, and imported panel is closest to the north. This mostly affects lead time rather than price.

Choosing without overthinking it

For most buyers the decision is simple.

Indoor furniture, cabinets or anything with mixed materials: the south.

Outdoor furniture and acacia products: the centre, or the south if you want more factory choice and accept a slightly longer material chain.

Plywood, panels and components: the north.

Then let the factory shortlist follow from the category rather than from the map. A good factory in the wrong cluster still beats a mediocre one in the right one, and the how to source guide covers the sequence for getting to that shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

Which region is best for outdoor furniture?

The centre, around Quy Nhon in Binh Dinh province, because it sits close to the acacia plantations and the industry there grew up around garden furniture for Europe. Southern factories also build outdoor, but the centre is where the species and the experience concentrate.

Does the region change my shipping cost?

Yes. Southern factories ship from Ho Chi Minh City, northern factories from Hai Phong, and central factories from Quy Nhon or truck south. A factory quoting FOB from a port far from its plant has inland trucking inside the price, so always ask which port the quote uses.

Is one region cheaper than another?

Labour costs vary less than buyers expect. What varies is subcontractor depth and logistics. A cluster with a deep subcontractor base absorbs a complex product cheaply, and an isolated factory has to truck components in.
